This exhibition presents men’s and women’s clothing from 1780 to 1825 in a dozen period rooms throughout the museum. It considers how Americans wrestled with the political implications of fashion and national identity. In the first fifty years after the Declaration of Independence, Americans struggled to create a new national identity—and attain international credibility—and fashion was key to this effort.
